The biological science lab

The group also has access to a range of other research platforms (e.g. genomics, histopathology, immunohistochemistry, electrophoresis, spectrophotometry, fluorescence and colorimetric imaging and flow cytometry) within the building.

Is located on the 3rd floor of the Clinical Sciences Building at The Prince Charles Hospital.

FACILITIES & EQUIPMENT: This area has the following resources:

(i)   clean desk spaces with edu-roam wifi access and coffee and tea facilities,

(ii) PC1 laboratory equipped with

  1. Beckman Counter AcTDiff Haematology analyser (human and animal modes)
  2. Rotational Thomboelastometry (ROTEM) analyser
  3. Multiplate, Platelet function analyser
  4. Multiple bench top centrifuges including one with blood bag capacity.
  5. Whole blood donor unit processing capability
  6. Cell culture facilities (incubator, laminar flow hood, inverted microscope)
  7. AxioImager motorised upright microscope with epifluorescence, colibri and Axiovision software
  8. Routine laboratory equipment e.g. balances, pH meter, fridge, freezers

  • The ovine model to investigate the unholy alliance between extracorporeal circuitry and transfusion medicine: characterising inflammation and injury.
  • Ovine models of Transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI)
  • Ovine models of haemorrhage & transfusion, trauma & transfusion, and sepsis & transfusion.
  • Clinical study of Selenium and Oxidative Stress in cardiac surgery patients
  • Expression and release of HMGB1 in calcific aortic valve stenosis
  • Point of care coagulation testing of cardiac surgery and critical care patients
  • Sedation and anti-microbial pharmacokinetics of ECMO patients
