Venopulmonary Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation and the Importance of Nomenclature Adherence for an Emerging Mode

To The Editor: We read with interest the Concise Definitive Review by Hockstein and Fan, which summarizes the roles of venopulmonary extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in supporting patients with cardiopulmonary failure. This review is informative and timely as peripheral placement of cannulas in the pulmonary artery is gaining attraction. The authors detail that, unlike conventional VV-ECMO, this ECMO mode uniquely provides both respiratory and right heart support particularly in cases of right ventricle failure.
