PhD candidate wins Young Investigator Award at ISMCS Conference

Griffith University PhD student Taylor Sing has been awarded the 2023 Asia Pacific Young Investigator Award at the 29th International Society for Mechanical Circulatory Support conference (ISMCS) in Dallas. Representing the Critical Care Research Group’s ICETLab, Griffith University, and medical research charity, The Common Good, Taylor presented his research into developing a novel intra-ventricular balloon pump.

“It was fantastic to hear the outstanding work being performed across the world to improve access to optimal treatment for advanced heart failure patients, and the bright future ahead.

“Intra-Ventricular Balloon Pumps (IVBPs) are currently being investigated in vitro as a prototype, alternative treatment strategy to rotary ventricular assist devices, with the aim of providing short-term circulatory support that is more cost-efficient and less invasive to the patient,” explains Taylor.

“We called on CCRG’s world renowned mock circulatory loop and tested an IVBP to assess whether blood damage resulting from the use of an IVBP is comparable to current generation devices in a realistic patient heart and circulatory system simulator.”

The ISMCS provides a broad international forum for intensive discussion of research, development, clinical use and social acceptance of rotary blood pumps and all related forms of mechanical circulatory support. The goal is to provide technologies and applications, and clinical procedures for rotary blood pumps and related systems for saving lives, improving the life quality of recipients and for cost-efficient availability of the emerging therapies.

Taylor will submit his PhD later this year and hopes to continue working on research and development of mechanical circulatory support devices to improve patient outcomes and increase the availability of treatment.
