Research Saves Lives

Leading clinical research, preclinical models and biomedical engineering

Based at The Prince Charles Hospital, Australia’s leading cardiothoracic hospital, the Critical Care Research Group consists of three main research streams – Clinical Research, Translational Science, and Engineering.

All research has the same goal: to improve treatment outcomes for hospital patients and the critically ill

Our research is clinically-focused and aims to address gaps in current practice to aid clinical decision-making and patient management. Our research aims to improve levels of care for critically ill patients, reduce healthcare costs and improve patient outcomes, including in recovery post-discharge.

The Critical Care Research Group is a unique research environment with multi-disciplined teams, including clinicians, nurses, scientists and engineers regularly collaborating. From improving outcomes for heart transplant patients to better understanding acute respiratory failure, the scope of current research projects is vast and ever-growing.

Accolades and collaborations

Since being founded by Professor John Fraser in 2004, the Critical Care Research Group has attracted more than $28 million in grants and industry funding, and published over 500 papers.

The Group was awarded the first National Health and Medical Research Council’s Centre of Research Excellence Grant in 2014 for Advanced Cardio-respiratory Therapies Improving Organ Support.

The Critical Care Research Group has ongoing collaborations with The University of Queensland, The Alfred Hospital and St Vincent’s Hospital, which, combined with the Group’s headquarters at The Prince Charles Hospital, Brisbane, unites a strong network across the three major cardiac hospitals in Australia.

The Group belongs to multiple national and international research networks, including ECMOnet, EuroELSO, APELSO, and ANZICS amongst others.
