Dr Silver Heinsar wins UQ Dean’s Award for Outstanding HDR Thesis

Former CCRG International Research Fellow, Dr Silver Heinsar and his Doctoral work has been awarded The University of Queensland's 2023 Dean's Award for Outstanding Higher Degree by Research Thesis.

Dean of UQ's Graduate School Professor Virginia Slaughter noted that fewer than 10% of PhD and MPhil graduates are recognised in this way and that Dr Heinsar's thesis is considered to be a substantial contribution to the field of pulsatile extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

"Dr Heinsar must be commended for what is an outstanding thesis, conducted with a methodology of the highest quality,” said Pr Nicolas Bréchot MD, Phd, AP-HP.Centre, Université Paris Cité, France, who acted as Dr Heinsar's examiner.

“The data presented in his thesis comes from a very difficult piece of work and offers a significant contribution to our knowledge of circulatory support. This research, along with other projects currently being undertaken by CCRG, will have an enduring impact on this field for many generations of clinicians and researchers to come.”

Covering a four-year body of work, Dr Heinsar’s thesis examinse the use of pulsatile flow veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-A ECMO) support in cardiogenic shock (CS). The findings highlight the complexity of the interaction between the device and physiology and identifies potential benefits if careful consideration is maintained in future trials and clinical use.

Dr Silver Heinsar is a junior doctor specialising in cardiology and an emerging critical care researcher. He completed his PhD with CCRG in 2023 and is passionate about ECMO research. Dr Heinsar has been recognised twice as Young Investigator of the Year in 2020 & 2022 at the European Extracorporeal Life Support Organisation and in 2021 at the Asia-Pacific Extracorporeal Life Support Organization.
