CCRG flag flies high in Estonia

Critical Care Research Group Fellows, Drs Indrek Rätsep and Silver Heinsar took centre stage at the 11th Intenational Baltic Congress of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Congress in Estonia last week, presenting the Group’s research to a large delegation at the Estonian National Museum, in Tartu.

Speaking in the Pumps and Flows session chaired by intensivist, Associate Professor Ieva Jovaišiene, Vilnius University Faculty of Medicine, Silver and Indrek shared information about CCRG’s ground-breaking studies on Pulsatile VA ECMO for cardiogenic shock.

“It was a great congress and important to meet with many of the Baltic’s leading anaesthetists and intensivists. It was also great to be back in Tartu, the same city where I studied medicine at the Tartu University” said Dr Silver Heinsar (below left), who represented CCRG as part of the international faculty at the congress.

“It’s always surprising and humbling to see how well our work is recognised at these international events. I received lots of positive feedback from people saying they have been following our work for years.”

Dr Rätsep is a senior clinician at the North Estonia Medical Centre Foundation and has been collaborating with CCRG for some time. At BaltAnestIC 2023, Dr Ratsep shared research findings about major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in patients with severe COVID-19. Dr Rätsep was one of 85 international delegates who attended CCRG’s inaugural Critical care International: Knowledge, Evidence and beYond (CRIKEY) Summit in March 2023.

Dr Heinsar is an emerging clinician-researcher at the University of Queensland with a focus on mechanical circulatory support and a special interest in ECMO. His contributions to ECMO research are internationally recognised as he is the first dual-recipient of the prestigious European Extracorporeal Life Support Organisation Young Investigator Award.
